Something Will Happen

This piece paid homage to the universe, to the seemingly mysterious web of interconnectedness that runs beneath every human experience. This piece was developed from the particular idea of two individuals meeting—everything that had to happen to make that meeting possible.

This piece is intricate and precise. No line or pattern is random, just as that web of interconnectedness, though some markings may have occurred out of adaptation to the process.

This piece followed directly after Something Will Happen. Required to use only our hands, I decided to "let go" after the prior project and surrender entirely to the process. Rather than calculated and precise markings, the water was free to go wherever it desired.

Time as a Murmuration

I had been captivated by the absurdity of dimensions and how time exists, or seemingly doesn't, within each of them. This painting's composition is derived from small etchings, or tick marks, each representing an instant of time passing—or, as we've come to define it, a “second.”

In the fifth dimension, among others, it is understood by physicists that time is not linear; one could move through timelines or view all of time at once as well as manipulate it.

Would you believe me if I told you that you were fully capable of doing this, right now?

Time is not linear in the same way our period of humanity has come to define, teach, and rely on it. It is a present moment, continuously unfolding upon itself. It is a flow. By coincidence, this painting mimics the movement of bird murmurations.

Was it really a coincidence?

Collage - Daniel

This project was to create the composition and style of a piece from a collage of various images. I chose to digitally collage old figure drawing exercises from a prior drawing course with a photograph I found of my good friend, Daniel.

The figures gallivant in the space around him, interacting with his body and replicating the energy he exudes not only in life but in this painting. Playful and child-like but with a provocative undertone created by the nude female figures in seemingly confident and poised positions.

As an introduction to watercolor, this project invited us to paint objects from our home.

Classmates described this painting as nostalgic and warm-hearted, of a familiar place of the past with the lightened color palette and distressed detailing.

I found great satisfaction and joy in seeing the intricate 3D edges, layers, and characteristics of the frames come to life on paper with a medium that was new to me.
